Songjiang, known as Huating in ancient time,was established as the Huating County in 751 A.D. and was changed to its present name in the beginning of the Republic of China. Before Shanghai started its port business, Songjiang was the political, economic and cultural center in Shanghai region and was reputed for its abundance, as a historical saying goes: the financial revenue in Suzhou and Songjiang occupied half of the whole country. On Feb. 27, 1998, Songjiang County was superseded by Songjiang District with its district seat at Songjiang Town under the approval of the State Council.
